Paraquat (N, N′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dichloride) is a highly toxic, non-selective, quaternary ammonium herbicide used worldwide for weed control and crop desiccation. It acts rapidly to destroy plant tissue, but ingestion is often fatal in humans, causing severe damage to the lungs, kidneys, and liver. Due to its high toxicity, it is classified as a Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) in many regions.
